Breast Uplift
After pregnancy — or simply between the late twenties and mid forties — the volume of the breast may stay the same while its firmness and position do not. Mastopexy corrects position and firmness without reducing or enlarging size.
At a glance
How it is performed
In milder cases the lift is achieved through a scar around the circumference of the areola alone. In more marked cases a keyhole pattern is used: a scar around the areola, a short vertical scar, and a limited scar in the fold under the breast.
Scars sit in the same positions as in a breast reduction but are more limited in extent, and the risk of soft-tissue loss is lower because far less tissue is displaced.
A 24-hour hospital stay is usual. A supportive bra is worn day and night for four weeks. Careful scar care — taping and moisturisers over several months of maturation — usually results in very acceptable scarring.
Who is it for
- Breasts that have lost firmness after one or more pregnancies or repeated weight change.
- Loss of the youthful, erect position while volume is broadly unchanged.
- Patients who need lift plus a little fullness — a small implant can be combined where tissue rearrangement alone is not enough.
- Patients who accept that lifting is traded against a scar.

Recovery timeline
- Days 1–3
Small drains, if used, are removed. Temporary pain is controlled with analgesics.
- Week 1
Dressings changed every other day; swelling, tenderness, numbness of the breast skin and tiredness are normal.
- Weeks 1–2
Stitches are removed in stages; most patients return to work.
- Weeks 4–6
Strenuous exercise and sunbathing are resumed.
- Months 3–24
Scars flatten and fade progressively.
Risks & honest expectations
- Fluid collection under the flap, blood clots, bleeding under the skin.
- Infection, delayed healing, or poor healing with visible scarring or skin loss.
- Reactions to anaesthesia.
- Wide or keloid scars in patients with that tendency.
- Need for a second, corrective procedure in a small proportion of cases.

Questions about this procedure
Will I be smaller after a lift?
No. Mastopexy repositions and firms without removing significant volume. If you also want to be smaller, it is combined with a reduction; if fuller, with an implant.
How visible are the scars?
They fade over three months to two years, and are placed where a bra or swimwear covers them. They do not disappear entirely — that is the honest trade for the lift.
Can I still breast-feed?
In most cases yes, as the nipple and duct system remain attached to the underlying tissue, but this must be discussed individually.
