Every patient tolerates pain differently — some describe an ache, others more discomfort. Appropriate pain medication is prescribed after surgery. Operations that require elevating or tightening muscle, such as a breast augmentation, involve moderate discomfort in the first days.

It depends on the procedure and on you. Most patients need assistance for the first two days and can look after themselves soon after. Breast augmentation patients are usually independent by the second day and back at work within five to seven days if no heavy lifting is involved. These are approximations — the timescale for your procedure is discussed at consultation.

All patients are encouraged to start slow walking on the second post-operative day. Regular aerobic and vigorous activity is avoided for the first two weeks to reduce bleeding, swelling and bruising. Weight lifting and contact sports are usually allowed at one month.

Antibiotics are used where a procedure may release bacteria into the bloodstream. Your surgeon will tell you what applies to your operation.
